Learning as wide as the sky

A Montessori day for home-educated children: hands in the soil, eyes on the stars, on a working Wairarapa farm.

Cosmic education

“The child who has felt a strong love for his surroundings and for all living creatures, who has discovered joy and enthusiasm in work, gives us reason to hope…”

Maria Montessori

Montessori begins with the whole universe and finds the child’s place within it: the sun, the seasons, the soil, and the small green shoot. Out here, that is not a poster on a wall. It is the paddock, the weather, the animals and the night sky, all part of the classroom.

A day on the farm

Real work, real materials, real world

Unhurried, mixed-age and self-directed: a genuine Montessori prepared environment wrapped around the rhythms of a working farm.

The prepared environment

Beautiful materials, freely chosen

Low open shelves hold the classic Montessori materials across practical life, language, mathematics, culture and science. Children choose their own work, follow it as far as it takes them, and return it with care. Calm, ordered, and quietly purposeful.

Learning outdoors

A whole farm to grow with

A garden and orchard to plant and tend, animals to feed and care for, weather to watch and space to roam. Children learn where food comes from, how seasons turn, and what it means to look after living things. This is the heart of Montessori’s practical life and cultural work.

The great lessons

Big stories, deep projects

For older children, cosmic education tells the grand story, from the birth of the universe to the coming of life and people, and then lets them chase what fires their imagination through research and long, absorbing projects. There is time and space to go deep, not just wide.
